On June 3, 2025, the President Trump's administration issued a new Proclamation By which Tariffs on steel and aluminum imports are increased, going from 25% to 50%The measure is adopted within the framework of the Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, arguing that imports of these products represent a threat to the national security of the United States.
The text of the proclamation establishes a special treatment for the United Kingdom, in the context of the preliminary trade agreement recently signed between the two countries. Thanks to this exception, the British steel and aluminum imports will continue to be subject to the 25% tariff until at least July 9, 2025.
However, The temporary exemption is conditional on the implementation of agreed commitments within the agreement If it does not materialize, the The United Kingdom could face the same tariff increase..
The increase maintains the original structure of Section 232, which means that Preferences for products with US content remain in effect, and that the tariff applies only to the steel or aluminum content of a product.
The measure comes into effect on June 4, 2025..
